The Fascination of the Blackpool Dance Festival
The Open British Championships, held regularly in Blackpool at the end of May, were and are by far the most important Dance Festival of the World.

Johannes Czech (1966): „Blackpool is the dream of all dance couples of the world. Blackpool is the essence for superlative in British Ballroom Dancing… Most interesting was the final in the Latin American section because the Open British Professional Latin American Championship took place after the World Professional Latin American Championship in Berlin and more of the top couples participated in Blackpool:
1st Irvine (England), 2nd O'Hara (England), 3rd Trautz (Germany), 4th Goodyear (England), 5th Opitz (Germany), 6th van Reenen (South Africa)”

Gerd Hädrich (1969): „Always in May the dancing world meets in Blackpool. Some time ago there was a saying: ‘if you want to meet a friend, go to Paris and go a few times up and down the Champs Elysees, then you meet him for sure’. For Blackpool one could say it slightly differently: ‘if you want to meet the best-known Amateurs and Professionals, go to Blackpool.’ It was as true for this year as it was true for every year…”

„…The organisation is unique. The rounds start so very punctually that everybody could set his watch by them. The work done by the orchestra all week long is absolutely unbelievable. I always wonder why the usually quite busy British Unions don’t interfere, don’t make a ‘music-trouble’. The quality of the music is excellent. How could it be different… Always in the background is the soul of the Festival, Mrs. Ilett, who carefully prepares everything, an enormous work she has been doing for years.”

Nach dem Beginn der verschiedenen Runden kann man beim Vergleich mit den Programmterminen getrost seine Uhr stellen. Die Zeiten werden genau eingehalten. Gerd Hädrich (1972): „What exactly makes the difference, the fascination of this Dance Festival? … Why are hundreds of Amateurs and Professionals coming every year, undertaking quite an expensive trip? One of the reasons could be that everybody can compete against the top couples of the world. The World Championships are not open to the world. Therefore they don’t necessarily reflect the actual world ranking. At the World Championship maybe just the top three or so are identical with the correct ranking, but further down (places 4 to 6) the real ranking list may no more be shown. The 12 couples who reach the semi-final in Blackpool are really the top couples of the world…”
(Original German text: „…Was eigentlich macht die Faszination dieses Dance Festivals aus? Nirgendwo in der Welt liegen Erfolg und Misserfolg, Glück und Enttäuschung so nahe beieinander wie hier. Warum kommen Jahr für Jahr Hunderte von Amateuren und Professionals für viel eigenes Geld nach Blackpool? Ist vielleicht der Grund der, dass sie hier die einzige Möglichkeit haben, sich mit der Weltelite zu messen? „…But this (mentioned above) cannot be the only reason. I think something else plays a vital role. In Blackpool Amateurs and Professionals alike are living together in perfect harmony for one week. One week out of 52 in which the dancing alone is important. The ‘politics’, spoiling the atmosphere so often, don’t exist in the relationship of the couples. It would be worth a try to take this ‘Blackpool spirit’ back home and try to keep it alive for the remaining 51 weeks of the year.”

Heidegard Dresen (1977): „The dancing itself at the Blackpool Dance Festival is worth a trip, and important if someone wants to know what is going on, where the development is leading to. This year, in addition, the World Dancing Congress took place…
Eight days long the British Championships fascinated thousands of spectators from all over the world. Every night towards 1 a.m. the tension grew to the highest possible point when, after sometimes exciting battles, the speaker Alex Warren in his superior manner announced the winners.”

The Adjudicators at Blackpool
With the exception of the Team Matches the Open British Championships are judged exclusively by British Top Professionals (since 1938). Since 1961 all adjudicators at the Blackpool Dance Festival must have been former Finalists in the British Championships.
The fact that „only“ British judges are judging in Blackpool has been criticized for quite some time, especially in Germany whose couples sometimes had the feeling that they did not get the places they deserved (although many couples from Germany have won in Blackpool).
The following part of the Blackpool reports 1971 represents similar statements: “In Blackpool there are only English judges. If a couple from overseas – including the continent – is to beat England’s best couples, there must be a difference in the dancing quality of about two classes.” (Tanz Illustrierte No. 223, June 1971)

Mrs. Ida Ilett has organised the Blackpool Dance Festival from 1954 - 1978. Her successor (from 1980-2004) was Mrs. Gillian MacKenzie. Both ladies were and are very successful and recognized authorities. Mrs. Gillian MacKenzie continued the ceremony originally introduced by Mrs. Ida Ilett:
On Friday, on the first day of the Blackpool Dance Festival, all judges of the Championships were to appear before her. She then quoted the doctrine of honour for the judges:
"You will judge without fear or favour; you will judge on the performance of the night, and it matters not whether the British Champions are American, German, Japanese, British or whatever: the best must win."
In a way this tribute to Walter and Marianne Kaiser has become at the same time a tribute to the British Ballroom Dancing. And rightly so. The successes of Walter and Marianne Kaiser would not have been possible without their famous English Dance Teachers.

“Little did I think when I first entered the Empress Ballroom all those years ago that that was the beginning of a storehouse of memories which would find their way eventually into a book. But I do remember feeling strongly that the Festival was something I would hope thenceforward never to miss as long as it or I should last…
My sincere thanks are due to all. But my most profound thanks must be for having been born so conveniently that my life coincided with this wonderful Blackpool story.
